Dext Alternative for US Invoice and Receipt Capture and How Dext Competitors Compare

Dext's US business plan is $25.21 a month on annual billing for 250 documents, and line items cost extra. PayablesAgent includes line items on every plan, with 2,500 Base AI pages a month from $24 a month billed yearly.

Dext, formerly Receipt Bank, is a solid receipt capture tool and plenty of bookkeepers run on it. Teams usually start comparing when the work shifts from receipts to supplier invoices: that is when the line item add-on, the 250 document cap and the 10-client minimum for practices start showing up on the bill. Why teams look for a Dext alternative

Four points on Dext's own price list that push invoice-heavy teams to compare

Line items are an add-on. Dext's US business plan includes five line item documents as free credits, then charges from $20.50 a month or $0.50 per document on pay-as-you-go. Receipts rarely need line items. Supplier invoices almost always do, because coding a 14-line materials invoice across three job codes needs every row, not just the total. A business processing 200 such invoices a month on pay-as-you-go adds about $100 to a $25.21 base plan.

The base plan stops extracting at 250 documents. Dext states that once you hit the monthly limit you can keep uploading, but nothing is extracted until your next billing date or an upgrade. Seasonal businesses feel this exactly when the books are busiest.

Practices pay a 10-client minimum. Practice Essentials and Practice Advanced are priced per client per month with a minimum of ten clients, so a bookkeeper with four clients pays for ten. Data Health and Insights adds $7.50 per client per month on top.

Statements are separate add-ons too. Supplier statement extraction is from $20.50 a month or $0.50 per document, and bank statement extraction from $13.00 a month or $0.32 per document. Each is reasonable on its own. Together they turn a $25 subscription into something closer to $80 to $100 for an invoice-heavy business. Prices from dext.com, checked September 18, 2026.

How PayablesAgent Works

Three straightforward steps to replace your Dext workflow

1

Upload Your Documents

Drag and drop invoices and receipts in any format. PDF, scanned images, phone photos, email attachments. No special preparation required. Bulk upload hundreds of documents at once.

2

AI Captures Everything

The AI reads each document and pulls vendor names, invoice numbers, dates, amounts, tax details, line items and payment terms. Use Base AI for clean digital PDFs and Pro AI for scans, handwriting and complex layouts.

3

Export to Your Software

Download structured data as CSV, Excel or JSON on any plan, or export to QuickBooks Online from the Plus plan. The CSV and Excel files import into Xero, Sage and most other ledgers.

Features That Make PayablesAgent the Smarter Choice

What is included in the base plans, without add-ons

Full Line Item Capture

Every line item is extracted with description, quantity, unit price and total, on every plan. There is no separate line item add-on or per-document surcharge.

Rapid Processing

Single documents come back in seconds. Upload a batch of invoices and review structured results as they finish, with multi-page documents handled as one invoice.

Two AI Models, Your Choice

Base AI is quicker and handles clean digital invoices well. Pro AI is the highest-accuracy model for scanned documents, handwriting and complex layouts. Every plan includes a monthly allowance of both.

Clear Pricing

Published plans priced by page volume, not per client and not per add-on. Plan changes take effect immediately with prorated billing, and unused time on a lower plan is credited to the next invoice.

Flexible Export Formats

Excel, CSV and JSON on every plan, QuickBooks Online export and custom extraction templates from Plus, and API access from Pro.

Global Currency and Language

Process invoices and receipts in any language and currency automatically. The AI detects and normalizes currency formats, date styles, and tax structures from vendors around the world.

Switching from Dext Is Easy

There is no data migration and no onboarding project. PayablesAgent can run alongside Dext for a month so you can compare output on the same invoices, then take over the supplier invoice work while Dext keeps handling mobile receipts, or replace it entirely.

Monthly plans have no annual commitment and no implementation fee. New accounts can process a small number of pages at no cost to check the output on your own document types before choosing a plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about switching from Dext to PayablesAgent

How does PayablesAgent compare to Dext for receipt scanning?

For receipts, both tools capture vendor, date, tax and total. The difference shows up on supplier invoices: PayablesAgent returns full line item detail on every plan, while Dext includes five line item documents as credits and then charges from $20.50 a month or $0.50 per document. Dext's advantage is its mobile capture app and five users on the base plan.

Can I use PayablesAgent with the same accounting software I used with Dext?

Yes, with one difference in how the data gets there. PayablesAgent exports Excel, CSV and JSON on every plan, which import into QuickBooks, Xero, Sage, FreshBooks and NetSuite, and exports directly to QuickBooks Online from the Plus plan. Dext publishes to more ledgers natively, so Xero-only firms should test the CSV import step first.

Is PayablesAgent cheaper than Dext?

It depends on the documents. For under 250 receipts a month without line items, Dext at $25.21 a month billed yearly is cheaper and includes five users. For supplier invoices that need line items, PayablesAgent usually costs less: Starter is $24 a month billed yearly with line items included, while Dext adds $0.50 per line item document or a subscription add-on from $20.50.

How long does it take to switch from Dext to PayablesAgent?

Setup takes minutes: create an account, upload documents and review the output. The sensible approach is to run one month's invoices through both tools, compare the fields line by line, and switch at your next Dext renewal. Dext asks for 30 days' notice before an annual plan renews, so put that date in the calendar.

Does PayablesAgent handle the same document types as Dext?

PayablesAgent handles invoices, receipts, bills, credit notes, purchase orders and expense reports as PDFs, images or scans, including multi-page documents. Use Pro AI for poor quality scans and handwriting. Dext's supplier statement and bank statement extraction are separate add-ons there; PayablesAgent focuses on invoices and receipts.

Will my team need training to use PayablesAgent?

No. The workflow is upload, check the extracted fields, export. Anyone who has used Dext will recognize it within the first session. Plus plans add custom extraction templates, which take a little setup if you want fields beyond the standard invoice set.
