Hubdoc Pricing and Hubdoc Alternative for Line Item Invoice Capture
Hubdoc is cheap and it comes with Xero, which is why so many practices start there. It reads the supplier, date and total, and Xero has said it will not add line items. When you need every line of the invoice in your books, PayablesAgent reads them on every plan, from $49 a month or $24 a month billed yearly.
Hubdoc and Xero details come from hubdoc.com, xero.com/us and Xero's product ideas forum, checked September 19, 2026.

The short answer
If header totals are enough and your clients are on Xero, keep Hubdoc: it is already paid for inside the Xero subscription. Look for a Hubdoc alternative when you need line items (inventory, job costing, splitting a bill across accounts or classes), when clients are on QuickBooks Online as well as Xero, or when you want the extracted data as a spreadsheet or JSON. Dext and PayablesAgent both read line items; Dext charges for them as an add-on, PayablesAgent includes them.
How Hubdoc pricing works
Hubdoc has two prices, depending on whether you use Xero. Bought on its own, Hubdoc's pricing page lists $12 USD a month after a free 30-day trial, with unlimited usage, multiple collaborators and syncing to Xero, QuickBooks Online and storage services like Box.
If you are on Xero, you do not pay separately. Every Xero US plan includes the capture feature, which Xero's pricing page now labels Smart Document Capture. Xero US plans are Early at $25 a month, Growing at $55 and Established at $90, after a discounted first six months. One detail worth knowing: Early caps you at 5 bills, so a business capturing more than a handful of supplier bills needs Growing at least.
So the honest price comparison is not Hubdoc against a paid tool. It is "free with Xero, header fields only" against "paid, with line items". Whether the second is worth it depends on how much time your team spends keying line detail by hand today.
Does Hubdoc extract line items?
No. Hubdoc captures header data: supplier, date, invoice number and total. The request to extract full line item detail is one of the most voted ideas on Xero's product ideas forum, with 225 votes, and its status is "Not in pipeline". In July 2025 a Xero community manager replied that Xero does not have further developments planned for line item extraction in Hubdoc and recommended apps from the Xero App Store for teams that need it.
That matters for specific kinds of work. A restaurant bookkeeper splitting a food distributor invoice between food, paper goods and chemicals needs each line. So does a contractor costing materials to jobs, a retailer tracking inventory quantities and unit costs, or an AP clerk checking an invoice against a purchase order line by line. For those, a header-only capture leaves the most tedious part of the work still manual.
PayablesAgent returns the header fields plus every line: description, quantity, unit price, line total and tax, ready as Excel, CSV or JSON, or as QuickBooks Online data from the Plus plan. See invoice line item extraction for examples of the output.

When Hubdoc is still the right choice
Hubdoc does a narrow job well at a price that is hard to beat. Stay with it if these describe you.
Header totals are enough
If a bill posts to one expense account with one tax line, the supplier, date and total are all you need, and Hubdoc gives you that at no extra cost on Xero.
You rely on automatic fetching
Pulling statements and bills from utility and telecom portals without anyone downloading them is useful, and it is something an upload-based tool does not do.
Every client is on Xero
When the whole practice runs on Xero and nobody needs line detail, adding a second capture tool adds cost without removing work.
Who switches from Hubdoc, and to what
Bookkeepers with line-heavy clients
Restaurants, contractors and retailers whose supplier invoices need splitting by line. Page-based plans cover every client from one account. See invoice OCR for bookkeepers.
Practices with QuickBooks and Xero clients
One capture tool for both ledgers, with QuickBooks Online export and spreadsheet output for Xero imports. See invoice OCR for QuickBooks and Xero invoice OCR.
Teams comparing Dext
Dext is the usual next step from Hubdoc. Line items are an add-on there, so price both with the add-on included. Our Dext pricing breakdown works through real monthly totals.
Questions buyers ask about Hubdoc
How much does Hubdoc cost?
On its own, Hubdoc costs $12 USD a month after a 30-day trial, with unlimited usage. For Xero customers the same capture feature is included in every Xero US plan, labeled Smart Document Capture. Xero US plans cost $25, $55 and $90 a month after the introductory period, and the $25 Early plan is limited to 5 bills.
Is Hubdoc free with Xero?
Yes, in the sense that there is no separate charge: capture is included in every Xero US plan. You are paying for it inside the Xero subscription. Businesses outside Xero pay the $12 monthly standalone price.
Does Hubdoc extract line items?
No. Hubdoc captures header data such as supplier, date, invoice number and total. The line item request on Xero's product ideas forum has 225 votes and is marked Not in pipeline, and Xero said in July 2025 it has no further developments planned there. Tools like Dext and PayablesAgent read line items.
Does Hubdoc work with QuickBooks?
Yes. Hubdoc's pricing page lists syncing to QuickBooks Online as well as Xero. Many practices still find it more at home in Xero, since Xero owns it and bundles it, which is one reason mixed QuickBooks and Xero practices look at alternatives.
What are the best Hubdoc alternatives?
Dext is the closest like-for-like replacement for bookkeeping practices, with line items as a paid add-on. PayablesAgent includes line items on every plan and exports Excel, CSV, JSON or QuickBooks Online data. AutoEntry and DocuClipper are also on most shortlists. Choose by whether you need line items and which ledgers your clients use.
Get the line items Hubdoc leaves behind
Upload a supplier invoice with a long line list and check each row that comes back. If that is the work your team keys by hand today, it is included on every plan.
