Azure Document Intelligence Alternatives for Invoices and Accounts Payable
The prebuilt Invoice model reads a page for one cent and returns JSON. Somebody still has to build the upload flow, the review screen and the bill export to QuickBooks or your ERP. PayablesAgent is that finished product, with an API when your developers want one.

The short answer
Stay on Azure Document Intelligence if you have developers, your data has to live in your Azure tenant, and invoice reading is one piece of a larger app you are building. Switch when the people who need the numbers are AP clerks. PayablesAgent reads vendor, invoice number, dates, tax, totals and every line item, gives clerks a screen to check them, exports to Excel, CSV or QuickBooks Online, and costs $49 a month for 2,500 pages or $149 for 10,000 pages with three seats.
What the prebuilt Invoice model gives you, and what it leaves out
Send a PDF to the prebuilt-invoice model and you get back fields like VendorName, InvoiceId, InvoiceDate, DueDate, SubTotal, TotalTax and InvoiceTotal, each with a confidence score, plus an Items array with the lines. Microsoft trained it well on US invoices. That part is solid.
Everything around it is a project. Files have to land in Blob Storage or be posted to the endpoint, the analyze call is asynchronous so your code polls for the result, and the JSON has to be stored somewhere. Document Intelligence Studio is a testing and labeling tool for developers, not a work queue where a clerk fixes a misread total.
Then comes the accounting side: matching the vendor name to a vendor record, picking GL accounts and creating the bill in QuickBooks, NetSuite or Dynamics. Many Microsoft shops wire this up in Power Automate, which works until a flow breaks at month end and the person who built it is on vacation.
Azure Document Intelligence vs Textract vs Google Document AI vs PayablesAgent

Cloud prices exclude storage, compute and any Power Automate licensing, which are billed separately. Azure cost per invoice at real AP volumes
On the API fee alone, Azure is cheaper than any of our plans, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What matters is everything that fee does not cover. One-page invoices, pay-as-you-go list prices.
Azure: $10 in API fees
PayablesAgent: Starter, $49
Azure: $25 in API fees
PayablesAgent: Starter, $49
Azure: $100 in API fees
PayablesAgent: Plus, $149, 3 seats
Azure: $350 in API fees
PayablesAgent: Pro, $499, API
The difference runs from $24 to $149 a month. It has to cover Blob Storage, the polling code, a review screen, vendor and GL mapping, the QuickBooks connection and whoever keeps it alive when Microsoft retires an API version. Multi-page invoices widen the Azure bill, because every page is billed. A single afternoon of developer time per quarter usually costs more than the gap.
When Azure Document Intelligence is still the right choice
We would rather lose the sale than sell a tool you do not need. Azure is the better fit in four situations.
Invoice reading is a feature of your own software
If you are building a product, a per-page API with no seats is the right shape, and Azure's SDKs are mature.
Documents must never leave your tenant
Azure runs in the region you pick, under your own identity and network rules, and Microsoft offers containers for teams that need processing on their own hardware.
You read far more than invoices
Tax forms, IDs, contracts and custom layouts all run on one service and one Azure bill.
Volume justifies a commitment tier
Prepaid tiers start at 20,000 pages a month for prebuilt models and lower the per-page rate further.
Who replaces Azure Document Intelligence with a finished invoice tool
Most of them ran a successful proof of concept in Studio and then stalled on the part nobody budgeted for.
Controllers whose IT team moved on
The Power Automate flow worked for a year. Now it fails on scanned invoices and nobody owns it. Uploading PDFs and exporting invoice line items to Excel or QuickBooks is all AP actually needs.
Bookkeeping and CPA firms
Each client has its own vendors and its own QuickBooks file. A shared review screen and per-client exports replace a script that one staff member understands. See how firms run it on our invoice OCR for QuickBooks page.
Developers who want to stop owning OCR
The Pro plan's REST API takes a file and returns header fields plus line items as JSON, so the integration is three calls. Endpoints are in the API documentation.
How to test against Azure in one afternoon
Pull 20 invoices Azure already processed, including multi-page PDFs, phone photos and the vendors that gave you the most low confidence fields.
Upload them in the tool at the top of this page. There is no model to pick and nothing to label.
Check vendor, totals, tax and every line against the prebuilt-invoice JSON for the same files.
Price the full job: Azure fees plus the hours your pipeline takes, against $49, $149 or $499 a month.

Questions buyers ask about Azure Document Intelligence alternatives
What is the best alternative to Azure Document Intelligence for invoices?
If you want another cloud API, Amazon Textract Analyze Expense also costs one cent a page and Google Document AI's Invoice parser costs $0.10 per document of up to 10 pages. If your AP team needs a review screen and QuickBooks export rather than JSON, PayablesAgent starts at $49 a month for 2,500 pages, with a REST API on the Pro plan.
How much does Azure Document Intelligence cost per page?
The prebuilt Invoice model costs $10 per 1,000 pages on the pay-as-you-go S0 tier, one cent per invoice page. The Read OCR model is $1.50 per 1,000 pages. Custom extraction models and add-on features cost more, and commitment tiers lower the rate for teams that prepay a monthly page volume.
Is Azure Document Intelligence free?
Only for testing. The free F0 tier covers 500 pages a month and reads just the first two pages of each document, so a three-page invoice comes back incomplete. Production invoice volume runs on the paid S0 tier.
Is Azure Document Intelligence the same as Form Recognizer?
Yes. Microsoft renamed Azure Form Recognizer to Azure AI Document Intelligence. The prebuilt invoice model, the Studio and the billing meters carried over, which is why the Azure price list still shows Form Recognizer meter names.
Can Azure Document Intelligence extract line items from invoices?
Yes. The prebuilt Invoice model returns an Items array with description, quantity, unit price and amount for each line, along with header fields such as VendorName, InvoiceId and InvoiceTotal. You get JSON with confidence scores; a screen for clerks to correct lines and the export to your accounting system are yours to build.
Does PayablesAgent have an invoice extraction API?
Yes. The Pro plan includes a REST API with bearer token authentication: upload a PDF or image, start an extraction, then fetch the result as JSON with header fields and line items as table rows. Pro starts at $499 a month for 35,000 pages and five seats. See the API documentation for the endpoints.
Keep the line items and drop the Azure build
Invoice fields, every line, a review screen and QuickBooks Online export from $49 a month. Cancel any month.
