For AP teams and the developers who support them

AWS Textract Alternative and Amazon Textract Alternatives for Invoices

Textract reads an invoice page for one cent and hands you JSON. Your team still has to build the S3 jobs, the review screen and the export to QuickBooks or your ERP. PayablesAgent ships all of that as a finished product, with a REST API when you want one.

The short answer

Keep Textract if you have engineers, already run on AWS and process enough volume that one cent a page matters more than build time. Look for an alternative when the people who need the data are AP clerks, not developers. PayablesAgent reads vendor, dates, tax, totals and every line item, gives clerks a screen to check them, exports to Excel, CSV or QuickBooks Online, and costs $49 a month for 2,500 pages or $149 for 10,000 pages with three seats.

What sits between Textract JSON and a posted bill

Analyze Expense returns normalized fields like VENDOR_NAME, INVOICE_RECEIPT_ID and TOTAL, each with a confidence score, plus line item groups. That is the hard part of OCR done well. It is also where Amazon stops.

Multi-page PDFs run through the asynchronous API, which reads from an S3 bucket and signals completion through a notification topic. Someone writes the code that starts jobs, collects results, retries failures and stores the output. Then a clerk needs a way to see the low-confidence fields next to the page and fix them. Amazon's human review service, Augmented AI, is a separate product with its own price.

Last comes mapping: matching the vendor name to a vendor record, assigning GL accounts and pushing a bill into QuickBooks, NetSuite or Sage Intacct. Each piece is small. Together they are a product your team has to own.

Textract cost per invoice at real AP volumes

We will say it plainly: on the API fee alone, Analyze Expense is cheaper than any of our plans. The question is what the rest costs. One-page invoices, monthly list prices.

1,000 invoices

Textract: $10 in API fees

PayablesAgent: Starter, $49

2,500 invoices

Textract: $25 in API fees

PayablesAgent: Starter, $49

10,000 invoices

Textract: $100 in API fees

PayablesAgent: Plus, $149, 3 seats

35,000 invoices

Textract: $350 in API fees

PayablesAgent: Pro, $499, API

The gap between the two columns is $39 to $149 a month. That has to pay for S3, the job queue, the review screen, the QuickBooks mapping and the engineer who keeps them running when an AWS SDK or an accounting API changes. For most AP teams under 35,000 invoices a month, one day of developer time a quarter already costs more than the difference.

When Textract is still the right choice

We would rather you stay on Textract than buy a tool you do not need. It wins in four cases.

You are building a product

If invoice reading is a feature inside your own software, an API priced per page with no seats is the right shape.

Volume runs into the millions

Above one million pages a month Analyze Expense drops to $0.008 a page, and the build cost spreads thin.

Your data has to stay in your AWS account

Textract keeps documents inside your own buckets, regions and IAM policies.

You read far more than invoices

IDs, lending packets, forms and free text all run on the same service and bill.

Who replaces Textract with a finished invoice tool

The teams we hear from usually started with a Textract proof of concept and stalled at the same point.

AP teams without a developer

The controller can read the JSON, but nobody has time to maintain the pipeline. Uploading PDFs and exporting invoice line items to Excel or QuickBooks is the whole requirement.

Bookkeeping firms

Dozens of clients, each with its own vendors. A shared review screen and per-client exports beat a script that one person on staff understands.

Engineering teams who want to stop owning OCR

The Pro plan's REST API takes a file and returns header fields plus line items as JSON, so the integration shrinks to three calls. Details are in the API documentation.

How to compare against Textract in one afternoon

1

Pick 20 invoices Textract already processed, including the multi-page ones and the photos.

2

Upload them in the tool at the top of this page. No fields, queries or adapters to set up.

3

Compare vendor, totals, tax and every line against the Analyze Expense JSON for the same files.

4

Price it on the full job: the API fee plus your pipeline's hours, against $49, $149 or $499 a month.

Questions buyers ask about Textract alternatives

What is the best alternative to Amazon Textract for invoices?

If you want another cloud API, Azure Document Intelligence's prebuilt Invoice model costs the same one cent a page and Google Document AI's Invoice parser costs $0.10 per document of up to 10 pages. If you want a finished tool with a review screen and QuickBooks export, PayablesAgent starts at $49 a month for 2,500 pages, with a REST API on Pro.

How much does AWS Textract cost per page?

Amazon Textract Analyze Expense, the invoice and receipt API, costs $0.01 per page for the first million pages a month and $0.008 after that. Detect Document Text costs $0.0015 a page, and Analyze Document with Forms, Tables and Queries together costs $0.07 a page. New AWS customers get 100 free Analyze Expense pages a month for three months.

Is Amazon Textract good for invoices?

Yes, Textract's Analyze Expense API reads invoice fields such as vendor, invoice number, dates, tax and totals, plus line item groups, for one cent a page. It is an API, though: storage, async jobs, a review screen, vendor and GL mapping and the export to your accounting system are left for your team to build.

Is Google Document AI better than Textract for invoices?

Neither is better across the board. Google's Invoice parser bills per document of up to 10 pages at $0.10, so it is cheaper for long invoices and more expensive for one-page ones, where Textract costs one cent. Both return JSON and leave review and accounting export to you.

Does PayablesAgent have an invoice extraction API?

Yes. The Pro plan includes a REST API with bearer token authentication: upload a PDF or image, start an extraction, then fetch the result as JSON with header fields and line items as table rows. Pro starts at $499 a month for 35,000 pages and five seats. See the API documentation for the endpoints.

Skip the pipeline and keep the line items

Invoice fields, every line, a review screen and QuickBooks Online export from $49 a month. Cancel any month.
