For AP teams on Google Cloud and Workspace

Google Document AI Alternative for Invoice Processing and Accounts Payable

Google's Invoice parser reads an invoice for ten cents and hands your developers JSON. The upload flow, the screen where a clerk fixes a misread total and the bill export to QuickBooks are still on you. PayablesAgent is that finished product, with an API when you want one.

The short answer

Keep Google Document AI if invoice reading is one feature inside software your engineers are building on Google Cloud. Switch to a finished tool when the people who need the numbers are AP clerks or bookkeepers. PayablesAgent reads vendor, invoice number, dates, tax, totals and every line item, gives the team a screen to check them, exports to Excel, CSV or QuickBooks Online, and costs $49 a month for 2,500 pages or $149 for 10,000 pages with three seats.

What the Invoice parser does well, and the work it hands back

Google bills the pretrained Invoice parser per document, and a document can run up to 10 pages. That is a real advantage for long freight, utility and construction invoices, where per-page APIs charge for every sheet. The parser returns supplier_name, invoice_id, invoice_date, due_date, net_amount, total_tax_amount, total_amount and a line_item entity for each row.

The catch is what happened to review. Google deprecated Document AI Human-in-the-Loop in January 2024 and listed its shutdown for January 2025. Before that, a team could route low confidence invoices to a labeling queue inside Google. Now that queue is something you build in your own app, or in AppSheet, or in a spreadsheet nobody enjoys.

After review comes the accounting work: matching supplier_name to a vendor record, choosing GL accounts and creating the bill in QuickBooks Online, NetSuite or Sage Intacct. None of that is in Document AI, and it is where most invoice pilots stall.

Google Document AI vs Azure vs Textract vs PayablesAgent

Google Document AI cost per month at real AP volumes

Invoice parser at $0.10 per document, pay as you go, against our monthly plans. Google charges per invoice whether it has one page or eight, so the comparison below counts invoices, and assumes one page each on our side.

500 invoices

Google: $50 in API fees

PayablesAgent: Starter, $49

2,500 invoices

Google: $250 in API fees

PayablesAgent: Starter, $49

10,000 invoices

Google: $1,000 in API fees

PayablesAgent: Plus, $149, 3 seats

35,000 invoices

Google: $3,500 in API fees

PayablesAgent: Pro, $499, API

Unlike Azure and Textract, Google's invoice price is higher than our plans at almost every volume, before you count a line of pipeline code. The case for Google is long documents: a 3,000 invoice month made of 8-page freight bills is still $300 on Google, while it uses 24,000 pages of a plan on our side, which puts you on Pro. Run your own mix through both before you decide.

When Google Document AI is still the right choice

There are four cases where we would tell you to stay put.

Your invoices are long

Per-document billing up to 10 pages beats every per-page price when most bills run five pages or more.

Invoice reading is a feature of your own product

If you are building software, a metered API with no seats and Google's client libraries is the right shape.

Data has to stay in your Google Cloud project

Document AI runs in the US or EU region you choose, under your own IAM rules and audit logs.

You parse many document types

Bank statements, pay stubs, W-2s and custom layouts can all sit on one Google bill next to invoices.

Controllers who lost their review queue

The pilot leaned on Human-in-the-Loop. When Google retired it, low confidence invoices started landing in a shared inbox again. A browser screen for checking invoice line items puts them back in one place.

Bookkeeping and CPA firms on Workspace

Gmail and Drive are not a reason to run Google Cloud. Firms upload client bills, check them and push them into each client's books from our invoice OCR for QuickBooks workflow.

Developers who want to stop owning OCR

The Pro plan's REST API takes a file and returns header fields and line items as JSON in three calls. Endpoints are in the API documentation.

How to test against Document AI in one afternoon

1

Pick 20 invoices Google already parsed, including the long ones and the vendors with the lowest confidence scores.

2

Upload them in the tool at the top of this page. No processor to create, no region to choose.

3

Compare vendor, totals, tax and every line with the Invoice parser JSON for the same files.

4

Price the full job: Google fees plus pipeline hours, against $49, $149 or $499 a month.

Questions buyers ask about Google Document AI alternatives

What is the best alternative to Google Document AI for invoices?

If you want another cloud API, Azure Document Intelligence and Amazon Textract Analyze Expense both bill about one cent per invoice page. If the people using the data are AP clerks rather than developers, PayablesAgent reads the same fields and every line item, adds a review screen and QuickBooks Online export, and starts at $49 a month for 2,500 pages.

How much does Google Document AI cost for invoices?

The pretrained Invoice parser costs $0.10 per document, where one document can be up to 10 pages. One- and three-year savings plans lower that to $0.09 and $0.08. A Custom extractor costs $30 per 1,000 pages, and Enterprise Document OCR is $1.50 per 1,000 pages after the first 1,000.

Is Google Document AI free?

Not for invoice parsing. New Google Cloud accounts get $300 in Free Program credit, which covers about 3,000 invoices on the Invoice parser while you test. Only Enterprise Document OCR has a standing free band, the first 1,000 pages, and it returns text rather than invoice fields.

Does Google Document AI still have human review?

No. Google deprecated Document AI Human-in-the-Loop in January 2024 and listed its shutdown for January 2025. Teams that relied on it now build their own correction screen or buy a tool that includes one.

Can Google Document AI extract line items from invoices?

Yes. The Invoice parser returns line_item entities with description, quantity, unit price and amount, alongside header entities such as supplier_name, invoice_id and total_amount. The output is JSON with confidence scores; the screen where a clerk fixes a line and the export into your accounting system are yours to build.

Does PayablesAgent have an invoice extraction API?

Yes. The Pro plan includes a REST API with bearer token authentication: upload a PDF or image, start an extraction, then fetch JSON with header fields and line items as table rows. Pro starts at $499 a month for 35,000 pages and five seats.
